What is IPL? How does the VivaLaJolie handset work?

IPL, an acronym for Intense Pulsed Light, functions in a manner similar to laser hair removal. However, it's considerably safer and more straightforward for home use. The way our IPL devices work is by releasing wavelengths that focus on the pigment in your hair. This light energy, once absorbed, converts into heat, subsequently destroying the cells responsible for hair growth. Over time, hair reappears at a slower pace and less densely, leading to a permanent decrease in hair growth.

Is VivaLaJolie IPL hair removal safe? Can it cause cancer?

IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light, is a proven and widely accepted solution for secure and efficient long-term hair reduction. Our FDA-approved IPL devices are safe for use in the comfort of your own home, and they carry certifications from the FCC, CE, and RoHS.

VivaLaJolie's IPL hair removal method poses no risk of cancer or other long-term issues linked with UV radiation, as all UV rays are meticulously filtered to safeguard your skin.

Does using the VivaLaJolie IPL handset hurt?

Contrary to other hair removal methods, IPL is essentially pain-free. You won't have to deal with biting your lip, accidental cuts on your knee, or any sort of tearing. While people with sensitive skin might feel some discomfort on higher settings, maintaining a lower intensity level ensures a gentle, comfortable treatment experience.

How long will it take before I see results? Is VivaLaJolie IPL hair removal permanent?

Many customers report a significant decrease in hair growth after merely 3-4 applications, achieving full results after about 12 treatments.

Certain individuals attain complete, smooth-as-a-baby's skin after approximately 12 sessions, discarding their razors forever. However, some might require additional touch-ups beyond this point, which is perfectly okay! The Luna handset, with its impressive lifespan of over 30 years, gives you the flexibility to perform as many touch-ups as necessary, whenever needed.

Provided that you adhere to the directions of using your VivaLaJolie IPL handset, you can look forward to a permanent reduction in hair growth!

How often do I need to use my VivaLaJolie IPL handset?

We advise undertaking the IPL treatment weekly for a consistent period of 12 weeks. If you're eager for quicker results, you have the option to use it twice a week.

After the initial 12-week treatment phase, we recommend using your IPL handset once a month for the next three months, or whenever necessary. Subsequently, you should expect to use your IPL handset for occasional touch-ups whenever you notice any new hair growth, typically every 2-3 months.

How is the VivaLaJolie IPL handset powered? Will it work in my country? Plug type?

Our handsets are equipped with dual voltage capacity (110V~240V), making them universally compatible. Each VivaLaJolie IPL Handset is accompanied by a 12V power supply with the appropriate plug type tailored to your country. For instance, orders from the USA will receive a plug with 2 straight prongs, whereas EU orders will come with a plug featuring 2 round prongs.

How do I clean my handset?

To clean your handset, you'll want to begin by unplugging the device from the power source. Next, use a clean, dry cloth and 70% alcohol to gently wipe the device. (Avoid using substances like acetone or other harsh liquids as they could potentially harm your handset.) Following this, use a separate dry cloth or paper towel to dry the device.

It's crucial to remember never to submerge your handset or any of its components in water.

Do I have to shave before using IPL? Which other hair removal methods can I use?

Hold on to your razors for now! Shaving plays a critical role in preparing your skin for IPL treatment. By shaving, you trim the hair to a suitable length to prevent burns while keeping the root in place beneath the skin, allowing your IPL handset to effectively target it. Other hair removal methods like waxing and tweezing fully remove the hair root, which can hinder the effectiveness of the IPL treatment.

However, if the area you plan to treat is already devoid of hair and feels smooth, there's no need to shave.

For those intending to use the IPL device on their face, we suggest dermaplaning prior to the treatment.

What is the IPL lamp made of?

The flash lamp integrated into our handset is a Xenon Quartz Raytube, which includes a glass filter. This filter acts as a barrier, filtering out detrimental UV rays to ensure the safety and health of your skin.

IPL Safety Tips

At what age can I start IPL treatment?

We suggest initiating IPL hair removal treatment only after hair growth has reached maturity. This generally happens around the age of 16, though in certain ethnicities, it can occur earlier.

Individuals under the age of 18 should obtain parental permission and consult with an aesthetician or dermatologist before using a VivaLaJolie IPL handset.

Do I need to wear eye protection?

No, there's no requirement to wear eye protection when using VivaLaJolie handsets. Although IPL does involve bright flashes, each handset is equipped with a sensor that prevents the device from flashing unless the flash window is in direct contact with your skin. However, as a precautionary measure, we suggest averting your eyes from the light when it flashes.

Is it safe to use VivaLaJolie’s IPL handset while pregnant or breastfeeding?

While there's no established evidence indicating that IPL has adverse impacts on pregnant or breastfeeding individuals, we advocate for safety first. Therefore, we do not recommend the use of at-home IPL treatment during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

Is it safe to do IPL over freckles or moles?

We generally advise against using IPL treatment over very dark freckles or moles. Light freckles, on the other hand, are usually not a concern. If you're interested in treating an area with dark freckles or moles, we suggest covering them with a white pencil before proceeding with the treatment.

Is it safe to do IPL over tattoos?

Performing IPL treatment over tattoos is not recommended as it could lead to painful burns. However, it is perfectly safe to use the IPL treatment around tattoos to address surrounding areas.

Can I use VivaLaJolie IPL before or after tanning?

If you've recently engaged in tanning activities, we suggest waiting for a period of 2 weeks before utilizing your VivaLaJolie IPL handset. Conversely, if you intend to tan after receiving an IPL treatment, we recommend waiting for at least 48 hours.

I have a skin condition – can I use the VivaLaJolie IPL handset?

Please refrain from using the VivaLaJolie IPL handset if you have any of the following conditions:

  • A recognized skin disorder.
  • A skin disease, such as allergic dermatitis, eczema, and so forth.
  • Photosensitive epilepsy or Photosensitivity.
  • If you are menstruating, pregnant, or lactating.

Furthermore, do not use the device on areas that are extremely dark (please consult the skin tone chart on this page), have broken skin, scabs, cancerous spots, hemangioma, or any artificial, aesthetic, prosthetic, or plastic sections.

When will I start seeing results?

This can, however, fluctuate depending on the thickness of your hair and the specific area being treated. Nonetheless, with each successive treatment, you'll notice your hair progressively regrowing at a slower rate and becoming less dense.

Where can I use my Luna?

Luna can be used almost everywhere!

It's suitable for use on your legs, arms, bikini area, face, and practically any other area where you want to remove unwanted body hair.

However, we advise against using your IPL handset above the cheekbones or on the inner parts of the bikini area (such as the labia minora, vagina, scrotum, or anus).

When treating sensitive areas like the bikini line, inner thighs, and buttocks, we recommend selecting a lower intensity setting, as the skin in these areas tends to be more sensitive.

How strong is Luna? What are the energy and wavelength outputs?

Luna is a potent device capable of delivering long-term, permanent hair removal while maintaining enough safety for use at home. It has an energy output ranging from 1.5J-4.9J/cm2 and operates within wavelengths between 470NM-1100NM.

Are there any recurring costs? How long will my Luna IPL handset last?

There are no ongoing expenses! Luna comes with 500,000 flashes, which, if used as directed, should last you for more than 30 years. There's no need for replacements or refills.
